Moderator (Steve Tierney)’s Response:
We’ve now spoken on the phone Mrs Steel. Hopefully the details I gave you of your UKIP County Councillor – who is responsible for highways issues – was helpful. If he turns out to be about as effective as chocolate teapot (which will not surprise me in the least), give me a buzz and I’ll see if there’s anything I can do.
Hi Steve – thought you might appreciate these!

Hi Steve;
Its been a while since we last corresponded on the subject of the Landlord Licencing scheme.
I wondered if you know in your capacity as a councillor what the outcome of the landlord consultation was ?
I have scoured FDC’s website and the local press and haven’t been able to find anything ? – dont they have to publish the result ??
I know that the consultation finished over a month ago now and Fenland still haven’t gone public with this ?
No doubt their busy manipulating the data to endorse this daft scheme for their own ends !
Thanks as always.
Michael.
The Landlord Licensing Scheme has not yet been adopted. Unfortunately, it appeared that it would not need to come to Full Council but could be pushed through by Cabinet alone, which I was very concerned about. But the strength of public opinion has apparently been such that they have had a bit of a rethink. They are now saying that the decision will be deferred until later in the year and that the proposals may change to reflect a different system they are considering. I don’t know much more than that, but for my part I’m just glad they are forcing it through right now. For the moment we need to just wait and see what happens next.
Hi Steve, Lucy here and I wondered if we could have a chat about speeding in Queens Rd? It really worries me and I think we need to do something about it. Thanks.
Hi,
Speeding is primarily a Police issue.
I have raised the issue of speeding on Queens Road with the Police in the past.
I have also taken Speedwatch to Queens Road and we are hoping to get back there next week as well.
Maybe you’d like to join us? The more the merrier!
If you’d like me to pop around and see you I’d be happy to do so.
Regards,
Steve Tierney
Thanks for your reply. Which might are you doing the speed watch? A quick visit separate to that would also be much appreciated. Thanks, Lucy
Good morning, I noticed on one of letters on your page about speeding on Queens Rd, just as important is the stupid parking on Queens Rd with the junction of Station Drive, people coming from Station Drive do not have clear vision going onto or across Queens Rd, there has already been a couple accidents there someone will get t boned before too much longer, double yellow lines 100mts either side of this junction would help and enforced, at the other end of Station Drive, stupid parking with the Railway Rd junction by staff at the two homes makes driving into and out of Station Drive dangerous, there are two free car parks within 500mts of these homes, staff should use them and not clog up station Drive, resident station drive
Thanks for your comment! I full agree with you that people do speed Queens Road dangerously. I have taken SpeedWatch to Queens Road a couple of times to try and slow people down a bit, but its obviously only a sticking plaster for a larger problem. I also agree that some of the parking is silly and very unhelpful. In regards to new Double Yellow lines, I will raise your suggestion with the County Councillor, Sam Hoy (It’s a County Council issue) and get some feedback about it. In regards to the staff in the homes, as long as the places they park are legal parking spaces they are as entitled to use them as anybody else, within the law. But I appreciate it is frustrating for residents and am happy to speak to the care homes and ask if they’d have a polite and friendly word with their staff to encourage them to be more considerate of people who live nearby.
Awesome blog steve hi its me richard hope your ok btw my dads funiral was a very nice send off for him, did you see in this weeks paper a old 70 lady got fined by them enforcement officers for dropping a cig end i hope wisbech council scraps that stupid trial run before someone gets hurt btw a few weeks b4 i bumped into you i was riding my bike down that road and saw the ex mayor and 4 no reason at all she gave me a angry faced look i dnt know her or said anything to her plz tell her off
Hi Richard,
People should not drop litter, whether they are 17 or 70. If anything, an older person should have learnt not to do it. I have no problem with tickets being issues to a Seventy year old, unless there is some medical reason why they didn’t understand that dropping a cigarette end is unacceptable.
I don’t think the lady you are referring to was angry. Maybe you misread the expression? It happens.
Sorry about your Dad, but please to hear that the send off went well.
Hi again thx 4 the reply :)
So wisbech round table scraped the ROSE FAIR QUEEN who gives them idiots the right to do that why cant you mr mayor close down the wisbech round table and see how they like it bunch of ********
I don’t have the power as the Mayor to close down organisations. And I think they are broadly a good organisation who have worked hard on the Rose Fair for years, I just think they’ve made a poor decision this time. I hope they will change their minds.
Hello there ,
I saw that you mentioned stopcyberbullying.org/ here stevetierney.org/how-to-keep-the-bullies-at-bay-for-those-on-the-autism-spectrum/ and I wanted to share my gratitude concerning your work on promoting online child safety.
I want to suggest you share an important guide which came out last week. I found it was very thorough on child safety online:
https://www.vpnmentor.com/blog/the-ultimate-parent-guide-for-child-internet/
I liked the way they summarized each section with actionable items for the parent/teacher.
Once again, thanks for helping protect our kids,
paola
Your idea of buisnesses opening up to allow people to use the toilet if caught short is a very gd idea especially if its a disabled person that needs the toilet in a emergency also i have some ideas for the castle valts aka dungeons as i call them turn them into a haunted attraction with a planned route with scare actors or use the valts far end area as a make shift show area with projected images on the wall or how bout a night at the castle valts where you can spend 1 night in a sleeping bag in the valts with leactures on history etc that would pull some visitors in because i been to the castle valts a few times over the years and them ideas would be awesome for it
Hi Richard, Yes, we hope to open the Castle up for adventure activities like you suggest.
I’m sure you are the man to resolve an issue we are having with lorries, mainly articulated following their
‘sat-nav’ and ending up going into Weasenham Lane, Abraham Drive, Ellerby Close and then having to turn around (5am last Sunday morning`).Some are Tesco lorries and I’m guessing the others are looking for the store.
No too sure how it could be stopped, perhaps better signage to Tesco or No through road/ No access to Superstore signs on the junction of Cromwell road and Weasenham Lane.
I await you views on this matter.
Sat Navs do take a while to catch up with road changes, and its a particular problem if the Sat Nav owner doesn’t regularly update their maps. I’ll email your message to County Council highways and see if they can offer any suggestions of what might help.
While on the subject of the roads off Weasenham Lane (the Reason Homes estate for want of a better description) I wondered, as I know you had raised this issue before if you have idea when the temporary roads that have been in place for at least three years will be finished.
Also do you have any insight into when we can expect Fenland Council to adopt these roads.
Hi Colin. It’s County Council that need to adopt the roads, rather than Fenland. County Council will not adopt them until the developers have completed all works, and the developers (as you know) have many ways to drag out the completion and avoid doing bits and pieces. I’ve spent the last couple of years pressing them to get things completed and each time it has some effect; they usually turn up and do some more work, but they never seem to quite finish. There is always a reason why, and its frustrating, but all I can do is keep pressing them. Which I am, and do.
Thank you for your reply to my last query regarding the unfinished roads off Weasenham Lane.
This really has been going on too long now,
Neighbours have been in touch with Reason Homes asking when we can expect to have the roads finished as they have had damage to their cars driving down potholes and over raised inspection covers.
Reason responded by saying they couldn’t finish the roads because they still have a number of issues to resolve including planning which they are working on for the last phase, (not too sure what the last phase is).
I’m not sure if you can help them with the problems they are having with planning, or at least perhaps talk to the right department at the council so that we might have some indication of when we might get them completed.
The problem is that they are within the law. At the moment, the dispute is “technically” a private dispute between the home owners and the developers. I suspect the reason the Council wont adopt is because the works are not complete and if they adopt at this point they become responsible for a situation which is presently a private dispute, which as you can imagine is not ideal. My efforts have been to encourage the company to get the work done and to encourage the Council Officers to press them to do the same. But all I can do is apply soft pressure because they know the law and the system and are not breaching it. I absolutely agree that its gone on too long and its become a joke. If it were within my power I’d read them the riot act. But I have to operate within my limited influence, which I continue to try and do. I’m not aware of them having any “problems with planning” and they have not contacted me to ask for help with any issue. As far as I am aware they are holding off because they are not ready to proceed, not because there is a planning issue that is slowing them up. If they think otherwise, they certainly haven’t told me so.
Steve I have been following the work being done by you and other volunteers on the castle and I think you are doing a fantastic job.
What I wanted to know is as the castle seems to be taking up lots of your time have you also been able to carry on with the other things I used to read you had been involved with like speed check and littler picking and so on ?
It would be a shame if your other projects were suffering due to the workload needed at the castle.
Thanks for your question. Basically, I never take anything on unless I think (a) I can do it and (b) it wont affect other things I do. I like to be busy and I do a lot of hours, but I am still keeping up with all my present responsibilities. My attendance at meetings is very good. I still do my litter picks several times a month (I list them in my newsletter). I still do Councillor Surgeries and a (nearly) monthly newsletter. I try to respond to questions and resolve peoples casework problems as quickly as possible. Speedwatch is on hold at the moment as we are waiting for a spare part on the equipment, but they will resume soon. I don’t post to my blog as often as I used to – primarily because the local opposition and local press use my blog to attack me and my colleagues, mainly by spinning/misquoting/cherry picking what it says or using it out of context. In order to have time for the Castle (a voluntary job) I dropped the Area Champion role (a paid job) – as I felt I could do more good with my time in the Castle than as the Area Champion. Finally – while I don’t think I’m doing less of anything I used to do, its worth pointing out that there are a very large number of Town, District and County Councillors as well as volunteers and colleagues who can pitch in to do any of this stuff (and many do).
Steve, It pleased me to see that you are going to be returned unopposed as my councillor for another term.
It is no more than you deserved for all the hard work you have put in for the residents of the Medworth ward.
May I offer my congratulations to you.
I note your comment about ‘Podcasts’ and You Tube, so I tried to to find your articles and the last one published ( that I found was two years old.
Perhaps you could help me and maybe others with a link to your podcast or You Tube channel so I can subscribe.
There’s a link to the right of this page!
Hello Steve. I live in Nottinghamshire , where opposition is building towards a new incinerator. I was interested in your successful motion to oppose the incinerator in Wisbech, and particularly in your comment that recycling provides more jobs. If you have any references that would substantiate that statement, I’d be really grateful if you could share them to help with our local campaign.
