Boom!

Like most guys I really like massive budget Hollywood action movies.  I’d like to say it’s a ‘guilty pleasure’ but it isn’t really.  I don’t feel remotely guilty about it.  I like ridiculously impossible fights between deadly villains and gritty, lantern-jawed heroes.  I like martial arts battles, dragon attacks, zombie incursions, superheroes, spectacular chases and incredible explosions.  I like my escapism served well done with a side of order Boom!
  
Which is why I got rather excited when I stumbled upon rumours of a new movie next year: The Expendables.  This 2010 action flick is directed by Sylvester Stallone and “tells the story of a team of mercenaries who head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator”.  That’s the whole synopsis, and let’s be honest – what more do you need to know?  It sounds like a reworking of The Magnificent Seven to me and so the first thing I thought is “Who’s in it?”  If you’re going to try and do The Magnificent Seven or something like it you’d need a really exciting cast, right?  Or it’d die before it began.
 
So I looked it up on IMDB.  Wanna know who’s in it?  Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren, Eric Roberts, Randy Couture, Steve Austin, Mickey Rourke, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenner (yep, that’s right, Arnie’s back!).  The girl contingent consists of Brittany Murphy (that’ll please the youngsters) and Charisma Carpenter (that’ll please the geeks.)  Oh. My. God.  Am I alone in feeling sorry for the bad guys?
  
Now I admit this could turn out to be the cheesiest, most two-dimensional movie ever made.  It might be full of black-and-white characterisation.  It might run from one unlikely action sequence to another with little plot to tie them together.  It might just be a marathon of no-holds-barred violence and mayhem.  We can but hope, huh?

    I always find myself doing something incredibly contradictory when I hear of something of such magnificence as The Expendables.

    It’s a big, butch, ass-kicking explodathon, yet the first thing I find myself doing is giddily indulging in a gleeful ‘gay clap’ (you know the one I mean)!

    I too am very much looking forward to this ludicrously fun looking film.

    I’ve heard about this film-will I go and watch it- ermm prob not. From the ‘A’ list of celebs in this -sure to be a blockbuster-movie, the cost MUST have been beyond belief.
    Now for a bit of a Victor Meldrew moment-so indulge me please…
    Bring back the days of good old Ealing-solid, comforting and British- not that I’ve anything against films from across the pond but will we still be watching them in 40/50 years time? I do thnk it’s icredible the amount spent on entertainment when so many are without…
