Forces In Motion

Whatever else you can say about the forthcoming new year, anybody interested or involved in politics knows it is going to be fascinating.  This is true on a local and national scale.

A new leadership (and possibly cabinet) at Fenland District Council.  The general election.  The possibility of a “double dip” recession, or the beginnings of a recovery (my own opinion on which of these is more likely is common knowledge.)  The new Lisbon-Driven European Union will get into its driving gears.  The Climate Argument will “hot up” (or “cool down”, depending on your opinion.)

In fact, if Gordon Brown chooses March for his Big Day then we’ll be looking at the huge campaign beginning almost immediately into the new year.   It’ll be all over the media, it’ll be rosette-wearing party activists at your door.  It’ll be Party Political Broadcasts, arguments and counter-arguments.  It’ll be an almighty spectacle, the result of which really is still a complete unknown – whatever anybody tells you.

If anybody in my division wants to help with the campaign next year, please get in touch. I’m the election liaison for our area and will be coordinating the campaign in Roman Bank & Peckover to get Steve Barclay elected for NE Cambs.  Cllr. Jonathan Farmer and Cllr. Sam Hoy are doing the same thing in Wisbech.  We have good teams but we can always use more help!

The forces are already in motion.  The wheels are already turning.  My top tip for surviving political saturation is “get involved”.  That may sound crazy, but think about it: the closer you are to the action, the more likely you are to be infected with the excitement of it.  And make no mistake – the events that are coming matter.  Take a position.  Pick up a (metaphorical) weapon – and join the battle.

Well, when Gordon finally sets a date for the General, if you give me the details of your campaign plan, I’ll certainly do everything I can ……

Honestly, don’t know what you’re worrying about. Nice ol’ Steve’ll romp it. Why not stay at home and put your feet up in front of the fire ?

Nice post. Certainly some food for thought there.

Got the lurgey mate ? Cat got your tongue ? It gets harder and harder these days to get a rise out of you. Might have to return to tormenting the cat ! (or tormenting A.M. – for whom I am in the novel position of actually currently having considerable sympathy for)

If I could do a smiley – I probably would.

    Hi there,

I live in Wisbech and I am new to the town from Latvia. At home I like politics and here also I am enjoying your writing.

What are the rules in the UK about people from other countries helping in your election champions?
