Meet The European Union (Part 1)

Maybe I’ve been unfair about the European Union in the past.  Maybe all we need, in order to appreciate them, is to take a look at some of the valuable MEPs from various countries who are there, day-in day-out, working hard on behalf of … well, somebody, I’m sure.

Anyhow, I thought, when there wasn’t much else going on, I could take  a look at one or two and try to work out just what it is that they are involved in.  You know … to try and be balanced and <ahem> fair.  So, purely at random, here’s my first attempt.  If you doubt this is a real person, go see for yourself.  Ladies and gentlemen I give … (drum roll) … Mr Tiny Kox.

Fascinating guy, huh?

If I were ever to meet Mr Tiny Kox MEP I’m sure he’d be willing to engage me with thrilling tales of his important work on the Sub-Committee on Sustainable Development.    Or even in his occasional stint as a “sub” for good old Harm Evert Waalkens on the Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Region Affairs

But speaking of the Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Region Affairs (or CEALRA as it may be affectionately known to someone, somewhere) I’m not sure they’ve included enough things in their remit.  Maybe a few more bits tagged on would allow them to have the sort of conversation usually reserved for the inebriated?  You know, where you start off talking about one subject and somehow end up talking about six completely different subjects.  If they were to extend the committee name just a little bit more it could become the Committee on the Environment, Agriculture and Local and Region Affairs And Failed Love Affairs And The Meaning Of Life And Where Does Space End.  I’m pretty sure this would make for an excellent committee who wouldn’t mind meeting until the small hours of the morning…  Remind me to make this suggestion to good old Alan Meale next time he sees me before I see him.  (Chairman of the committee.  Are you impressed by my newfound EU who’s-who knowledge yet?)

You may think that this must be the limit of Mr Tiny Kox’s authority and standing .. but no!  There is more!

On top of these lofty and vital roles he is more famously known as the Third Vice-Chairperson: Committee on Rules of Procedure, Immunities and Institutional Affairs (try saying that after a CEALRA meeting).  That means that there are only two other vice-chairpersons and one chairman more important than he when it comes to talking about Rules Of Procedure, or Immunities or Institutional Affairs.  Heady heights of power indeed!  Luckily for us, the chair of this committee is a Conservative MEP, John Greenway, so it’s all good.

Speaking of John Greenway, you might already know this but he is also a member of the Committee on Migration, Refugees and Population, the Sub-Committee on Migration and the Sub-Committee on Population!  But I musn’t get sidetracked.  I could talk about those august bodies all day!

Anyhow, there’s a little sneak-peak into the truly fascinating and astounding world-within-a-world that is the European Union.  I hope you enjoyed this sight-seeing tour and will join us again aboard ScepticTravel ™ for another thrill-a-minute visit behind the red curtain of authoritarian money wastage we know and love.
